Specialist Neonatal and Paediatric Surgery
Overview
The Specialist Neonatal and Paediatric Surgery (SNAPS) department at Great Ormond Street Hospital provides specialist surgical treatment for newborn babies (neonatal) and children (paediatric) with congenital (present at birth) conditions as well as diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
The department has an excellent international reputation and develops new ways of treating newborn babies and children, such as oesophageal replacement surgery and minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery.
Outcomes

In 2017/18 SNAPS discharged 1,057 inpatients with a 96% rate of non-readmission within 30 days.

In 2017/18 SNAPS had 1,203 scheduled theatre cases with a 98% rate of no unscheduled returns to theatre in 7 days.

In 2017/18 SNAPS performed 105 laparoscopic hernia repairs with 99% of children needing no repair within two years. During the same period 68 open hernia repairs were performed with 97% of children needing no repair within two years.

In 2010 Prof. De Coppi and his team successfully manufactured and transplanted the first stem cell supported trachea.
