Mr Joe Curry

Consultant Neonatal and Paediatric Surgeon

Overview

I am the senior consultant in neonatal and paediatric surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. I trained in the South East of England training consortium and was awarded the national gold medal for my performance in the FRCS paediatric Surgery exam.

My priority is to provide world class surgical care for all my patients regardless of how simple or complex the condition may be. Even minor surgery can be a stressful time for families so I seek to reassure all my patients that every aspect of their care will be meticulously planned and expertly performed from first consultation through to discharge. I am open, straight forward and honest with all my patients and strive to ensure that families and carers are given all the necessary information to make a fully informed choice about their child’s care and potential surgical procedure.

Credentials

My main areas of interest are in gastrointestinal (bowel) surgery and treating children born with abnormalities of the abdominal wall, diaphragm and gastrointestinal tract. My particular areas of expertise are in anti-reflux surgery and children requiring surgery for gastrostomy or jejunostomy. I have specific expertise in lower bowel surgery including children with ano-rectal anomalies, Hirschsprung’s disease and inflammatory bowel disease. I jointly provide an MDT service for girls born with cloacal anomaly. I perform regular revision surgery and provide frequent second opinions for paediatric surgery colleagues in the UK. I am part of a nationally commissioned MDT service for children with Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction.

I perform all aspects of general surgery for children including inguinal and umbilical hernia, scrotal hydrocoele, undescended testicles and medical circumcision. I also perform surgery for thyroglossal cysts and branchial remnants

I am highly active in training in my NHS practice. I was training programme director for the largest training consortium in paediatric surgery in the UK. I have mentored other consultants in the early part of their careers. I hold a post-graduate Certificate and Diploma in medical education from the University of London. I am the current South of England representative on the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons Executive committee.

I have published over one hundred peer-reviewed articles and 16 book chapters and presented over one hundred and ten times to national and international conferences. I regularly review articles for journals such as the Journal of Paediatric

Surgery, Paediatric Surgery International and Prenatal Diagnosis and I am the specialist editor for paediatrics for the Annals of the Royal College Of Surgeons journal. I write medicolegal reports for law firms and also ones commissioned by the coroner and medical regulatory bodies.
