GOSH Takeover Challenge 2025
Each year, Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) proudly participates in the Takeover Challenge, a national event organised by the Young People’s Forum (YPF) that invites children and young people into real decision-making roles within organisations. This unique initiative allows participants to go behind the scenes, work alongside key staff members, and gain insight into the inner workings of the hospital.
Who Took Part?
This year, nine young people stepped into various staff roles across GOSH, shadowing and even leading in some areas for the day:
- Stephen Whyte, Deputy Director of Education
- Amy Sutton and Erin Hanna, Deputy Heads of Play
- Claire Williams, Head of Patient and Public Involvement
- Dorothy Moore Brookes, Head of Chaplaincy
- Donna Robinson, Patient Experience
- Paul Ryves, Programme Director of the North Thames Genomic Medicine Service (NTGMS)
- Ajay Gosai, Volunteer Coordinator
- Jason Dawson, Executive Director of Space and Place
Highlights from the Day

Ava Watt took over the role of Programme Director of NTGMS. Ava toured laboratories, had a genetics lesson, learned about the Next Generation Study, explored learning opportunities, and tried out VR headsets.
Paul Ryves shared:
It was a privilege to offer this opportunity and gain insight into how young people view genomics in healthcare, recognising it as an important and valuable test. I even learnt a bit myself, especially about future education and VR training. This experience motivates our team to continue educating patients and the public about genetic testing and to improve engagement through our Genomic Medicine patient and public panel.

Darcy Preece and Sofia Slyvkanych took over as Deputy Directors of Education. Their day began with an introduction to the GLA senior team, followed by time in the simulation suite, learning about education technology, and touring the ambulance and CATS. In the afternoon, they led the directorate performance review meeting focusing on international, specialty, and academic education. Sofia prepared thoughtful questions for the meeting, showcasing their proactive approach.
Stephen Whyte reflected:
What an incredible experience participating in the GOSH Takeover Challenge was. I learned so much from the amazing children and young people who, despite enormous health challenges, continue to inspire us all

Alexander Slyvkanych stepped into the role of Director of Space and Place. Jason Dawson commented:
This was my second time participating, and I’m humbled every time. Alex was an amazing ‘boss’ — we coordinated the GEMS awards, toured behind-the-scenes areas, and even did a Health and Safety walk with the Clinical Site Director. Alex also met our CEO, Mat Shaw, and shared his idea to make GOSH greener. The day ended with time spent with the Sustainability team, which is clearly a passion for Alex.

Petra McKay and Simone Dey joined the Chaplaincy team. They spoke movingly about their experience:
We met a patient who had been at GOSH for nine months and connected with her family and siblings. It was beautiful to see how the chaplaincy supports not just the patient, but the whole family.
They also noted:
I didn’t realise how much support parents receive from different teams, not just the patient. It was heartwarming to see how everyone works together.

Larisa Sibayan and Leila Walter took over the Volunteer Service. Leila’s favourite moment was:
Dressing up as Chase from PAW Patrol — seeing the children’s faces light up was so sweet.
Larisa added: " the work the volunteer teams do across so many wards — it was eye-opening."
They also discovered the therapy dog team, which includes 38 dogs — a surprise to them both!
Emily Mullen took over as Head of Play. She started her day early, met the play team, and led a brainstorming session for a play podcast. The team enjoyed sharing jokes, songs, and riddles during their monthly meeting.
Feedback from Parents

Karen, mother to Darcy and Sienna, shared:
The girls were absolutely buzzing by the end of the day. It clearly made a big impression on them and gave them real insight into what goes on behind the scenes. They were really happy to have the chance to give something back to GOSH.
The Takeover Challenge continues to be an inspiring day that brings young voices to the heart of Great Ormond Street Hospital, offering a unique perspective and strengthening the connection between patients, families, and staff.
