Professor Victor Tsang

Overview

Professor Victor Tsang is Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Great Ormond Street and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals, and Professor of Cardiac Surgery, University College London.   Having qualified from Westminster Medical School University of London, he began his cardiothoracic surgical training with Mr Christopher Lincoln at the Royal Brompton and London Chest Hospitals.

For two years, he was a Lecturer and Research Fellow at the National Heart and Lung Institute under Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub. He continued his paediatric cardiac surgical training with Dr Roger Mee at the Royal Melbourne Children’s Hospital in Australia. His first consultancy post was at Southampton University Hospital.

Professor Tsang has been working in the Cardiothoracic Unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital since 1997, specialising in neonatal and complex infant cardiac surgery. He leads the surgical program for adult congenital heart surgery at the Bart’s Heart Centre in the City of London.

Professor Tsang has been an honorary surgeon in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Beijing and Hong Kong, and a visiting professor at several major cardiac institutions. He leads charity missions with Chain of Hope (UK) in the Caribbean and Ethiopia.

Professor Tsang has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and lectured widely at national and international meetings and is also one of the three Editors of a world-renowned paediatric cardiac surgical textbook. His research interests focus on risk model and adjustment in outcome monitoring in children’s heart surgery and the physiology of complex valve surgery.
