GOSH Shares Expertise at International Rare Disease Forum in China
On 5th July, Three distinguished experts from Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) were invited to speak at the China-UK Forum on Paediatric Rare Disease, part of the Second Liangjiang International Annual Medical Conference held in Chongqing, China.
The delegation included Dr Sophia Varadkar, Acting Chief Medical Officer; Professor Claire Booth, Professor of Paediatric Immunology and Gene Therapy; and Professor Mehul Dattani, Professor of Paediatric Endocrinology.
Hosted by the Chongqing Medical Association and co-organised by the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, along with other leading healthcare institutions in the region, the conference provided a major platform for international collaboration in medicine. With the theme “Integration and Innovation, Digital Enablement, Jointly Building the Western Medical Centre,” the event brought together medical professionals and academics from both China and the UK to share knowledge and explore future developments in the care of children with rare diseases.

Dr Sophia Varadkar, Acting Chief Medical Officer at GOSH, spoke on Rare Paediatric Epilepsies – Experience and Recent Advances, sharing insights into genomic diagnostics, cutting-edge therapies, and clinical strategies in the UK.

Professor Claire Booth presented Gene Therapy for Inborn Errors of Immunity: The Present and Future, highlighting progress in clinical trials, gene editing, and next-generation therapeutic approaches.

Professor Mehul Dattani delivered a talk on Congenital Hypopituitarism as a Model of Rare Disease: From Bedside to Bench and Back, offering an in-depth view of translational research in paediatric endocrinology.
During their visit to Chongqing, GOSH experts engaged in meaningful exchanges with local clinicians and researchers. Both sides expressed a strong interest in deepening collaboration, particularly in the areas of clinical research, medical education, and innovation in paediatric care.
The visit helped to deepen ties between GOSH and Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, paving the way for continued partnership in advancing paediatric healthcare.
