Our play specialists
The Play department at Great Ormond Street Hospital provides normal everyday play as well as specialist play preparation, both in outpatient clinics and on the wards.
Our play specialists are highly qualified, culturally aware and trained in the latest
techniques of using play to help children and young people deal with any fears or worries they might have about coming to hospital, feeling unwell or receiving treatment. They will also work with children and young people to form coping strategies.
There are various aspects to general play:
Preparation involves using dolls and books to prepare children for a specific procedure.
Distraction uses techniques to support children during treatments and procedures.
- Assessment allows play staff to develop a programme for children to reach goals during their stay in hospital.
