نظرة عامة
Mr Alex Woollard has been a consultant in the NHS since 2016, having trained in London. He completed his PhD at Harvard University and his microsurgical fellowship at the Queen Victoria Hospital. He is based at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), the Royal Free Hospital (RFH), and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH), specializing in complex soft tissue and bone reconstruction.
His involvement in facial palsy reanimation surgery began in 2007 during his specialist training under Professor Grobbelaar. For nearly a decade, he has led the adult service at RFH. Following Professor Grobbelaar’s retirement in 2023, he also took over leadership of the paediatric service at GOSH, ensuring continuity of care for patients as they transition into adulthood.
Mr. Woollard is actively engaged in research aimed at advancing the understanding of facial palsy and improving surgical outcomes. At GOSH, he collaborates with international partners through the ICHOMS data-sharing initiatives.
المؤهلات
Mr Alex Woollard is an expert in complex microsurgical reconstruction, with a particular focus on facial reanimation. Facial palsy is a complex condition, and in children can often be associated with other musculoskeletal issues. Understanding the overall picture of each individual and their needs within their family environment requires a large team of medical professionals and caregivers. My role is to coordinate that and lead the team to enable us to provide each patient with a bespoke treatment plan that give them the best outcome we can achieve.
Mr Alex Woollard is the lead for facial reanimation at both Great Ormond Street Hospital (for children) and the Royal Free Hospital (for adults), having trained with Professor Grobbelaar.
His team specialises in the reanimation of unilateral and bilateral facial palsy using free-functioning muscle transfers, and nerve grafts.

Mr Alex Woollard has a longstanding interest in research into nerve regeneration. This began with his PhD at the Centre for Brain Science at Harvard University and underpins both his work in facial palsy and amputee reconstruction.
At GOSH, his team collects outcome data for all their patients and collaborate internationally across Europe and USA.
